Tips and tricks for writing website content

Figure out who your audience is

Taking the time to find out who your audience is can have a huge impact on the style of writing you choose to use on your website. If your business is aimed at a specific group of people then you can write your website content with this in mind.

Finding out your audience is easily done. By using data that is provided on social media sites such as Instagram and Facebook, you can discover a lot of information about who is following you and use this to inform the sort of content you write about on your website.

Check out your competition

Having a look at the websites of similar businesses can give you an idea of what to write about. Be careful not to plagiarize or copy what other companies have written – you want your website to be unique to you.

Brush up on your writing

The quality of your grammar and spelling is extremely important as it shows your readers what kind of business you are. Putting forward accurate and well-written content tells the people reading the content that you are a professional company.

Your style of writing plays a big role in setting the tone of your website. Writing styles can be broken down into four categories:

  • Expository – This usually explains something in a process in a specific order and is factual, for example, explaining how a cosmetic procedure is carried out.
  • Descriptive – Describing places, people, events, situations or locations in a highly-detailed manner, for example, describing the flavours in a dish offered by a restaurant.
  • Persuasive – This style of writing aims to convince someone of a certain point of view and uses many techniques to entice the reader to do something or agree with something – in this case, to persuade them to book a consultation or treatment.
  • Narrative – to tell a story, for example, to let your readers know about your staff or business.
